About Me

The words in this blog are meant to  find a way back to myself. There will be days in which my posts may reflect on the mundane, the ordinary, the day to day. I do not promise to jot down something profound in each post.  There may be times that the superficial may creep into my posts.  I do not know, and I take pleasure in this unknown.

Initially, I set up this blog as a means to begin writing again.  I’ve done a considerable amount of writing for others and in the work place, but I wanted to create a space for myself and my words.

For the past 5 years (and counting), I’ve considered New York City my home.   This city has taught me several hard and soft lessons, and I am still standing. At the moment, I call Brooklyn home.  In my time in New York, I feel most at ease living in this borough out of any other though I have much love for Queens.  Texas will always remain my first home because of my parents and brother, but NYC is a worthy substitute.

Traveling is one of my passions. Nothing feels better than touching down in a new place, a new locale, a new experience – an unknown. I’ve had the chance to travel quite a bit overseas as well as within US borders.  My travels have taken me to Ghana, Germany, Holland, Belgium, & Costa Rica.  There is still much to see in the world, and I aim to see it in this lifetime.

I enjoy photography as well. I’m by no means a pro, but that does not stop me from capturing moments that (at the moment) escape words.

Like most people, music is of great interest. Actually, I know that I would go mad if there were no music surrounding me on a daily basis. Usually a song is a catalyst to a blog post, a thought, an idea, a trip to the imagination.

When I was a child, I had more imaginary friend than real friends (that changed as I got older of course). The world of my imagination behind my eyes was just as real as the world before my eyes.

Some of my other interests are writing, good storytelling, mythology, psychology, technology, social media

Here are 24 things about me. Yes, I know I could have listed 25, but I wanted to give the number 24 some Kojo love.

1. I was born during an eclipse.
2. On my birth certificate, my first name is spelled Kwadwo. It’s pronounced the same way a Kojo and means the same thing. I legally changed it to Kojo in high school.
3. My sun, moon, and mercury are in pisces. My ascendant is in gemini
4. My mom told me that when I was born the first thing I did was sneeze – not cry.
5. Before I was born, my parents were expecting a daughter. If I was born a girl, my name would have been Janelle. My parents were not expecting a boy, so no name was chosen beforehand. My name is Kojo by default. It means a ‘boy born on Monday’ in Ghana.
6. By the age of 10, my imaginary friends outnumbered my real friends.
7.  I was obsessed with mythology growing up (greek, norse, african, japanese, whatever). I won an award in 5th grade because of my extensive knowledge.
8. I had  a terrible stuttering problem at the age of 5. I went to speech therapy for 2 years to eliminate it (as well as my deep southern drawl).
9. In high school, I wanted to be Morrissey.
10. My biggest hurdle growing up was my shyness.
11.  My social security number is xxx-xx-xxxx (Click the link to find out.  This is for all of you identity thieves out there.)
10. I tend to keep to myself when I am writing, so I am sometimes hard to be reach. I can become a hermit when writing.
11. Spend a lot of time in my head daydreaming. (Note to future employers: I don’t daydream at work. Promise! I may do it during my lunch hour though.)
12. Love mangos.
13. My favorite colors are deep blues and purples.
14. This is a bad habit. When I feel wronged by someone, I tend to cut myself off from the permanently.
15. Of late, I love to cook. (Eating out in New York can get expensive.)
16. Only travel back to Houston because I miss my parents not necessarily the city itself.
17. I tend to keep this to myself, but I think about my little brother a lot.
18. I have 3 distinct scars. On my left calf (got my leg caught in a moving car gate in 2nd grade- the gate almost pulled my leg off) – On my nose (used to tell people that I got it in in fight – actually I got it when I ran into a wall playing laser tag) – on the left side of my head (car crash in 1998 – not my fault)
19. Love oatmeal cookies – not a fan of chocolate chip cookies.
20. Love to discover what was once hidden. I love to unearth secrets.
21. I enjoy watching the L Word though Lost and The Wire are my all time favorite shows.
22. I feel very lucky to have Michelle in my life.
23. My favorite role playing game of all time is Final Fantasy 3 (6 in Japan).
24. I’m sponsoring a little girl in the Philippines.

Mangos,

Kojo
