Tron Legacy: 28 Years in the Making |

All I have to say is that this trailer is oozing with sexiness and promise. In the current movie  landscape  of  ’80s sequels and remakes, this one seems to have the most potential. When it comes to ’80s movies, cartoons, and sitcoms being rehashed and packaged for a new generation, I am always a bit skeptical.   In my honest opinion, G.I. Joe should have never been made.  The remake of  ’Clash of the Titans’ seems to bear no resemblance or  link between itself and it ’80s predecssor.  Don’t get me started on the ‘A Team’ and ‘Conan’ (Mickey Rourke, your star is on the rise.  Why attach yourself to such a film? Poor movie choices and bad habits die hard it seems. EDIT: Rourke has come to his senses and bowed out. He will be replaced by Ron Perlman.).

I know I may be rushing the gun with Tron Legacy. I understand that a trailer can be filled with promise only to be followed by the anticlimatic, letdown of the actual film, but I am more than hopeful that this film will exceed my expectations and imagination.

A film such a Tron can generate such strong feelings of nostalgia for a child of the ’80s, who watched the film and manuevered and light-cycled their way through the arcade game,  so it is imperative a film such as Tron Legacy builds that bridge between the past and the future for those both familiar and unfamiliar to the film.  The feelings of nostalgia shared by a legion of ’80s fanboys and fangirls are  so pronounced that the ire and the inquisition may follow if the film is not done properly.

The very fact that members of the original cast have returned is a first step in the right direction.  Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner will reprise their iconic roles of Kevin Flynn/Clu and Alan Bradley/Tron in Tron Legacy.

Let me say this about Jeff Bridges.  Even with his varied body of work, I consider him to be one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood today.  When I learned that he won the Oscar for Best Performance of an Actor in a Leading role for Crazy Heart, I felt that the honor had been long deserved.  Much like the actors  Robert Downey Jr. and Mickey Rourke, I hope that Bridges’ star will continue to rise in the wake of his recent Oscar triumph.

I also find it interesting that Jeff Bridges and Garrett Hedlund are paired as father and son in this film because I consider Hedlund to be another underrated actor in Hollywood.   Hedlund’s acting resume has been light over the past couple of year. Let’s hope this film will jump start it.

As far as the Tron Legacy storyline,  Adam Horowitz ,who happens to be a co-executive producer and a writer for the hugely popular and mind-bending series – LOST,  is a co-writer of the Tron Legacy screenplay. So, I have complete faith in the the storyline being  sound and completely engrossing.  Horowitz actually wrote one of my favorite episodes featuring  Sawyer – ‘Every Man for Himself’.  Horowitz’s fellow LOST co-producer and writer, J.J. Abrams, did a remarkable job in the reboot of the Star Trek franchise, so I know that Horowitz will follow suit with the success of Tron Legacy.

In a technological world such as the one found in Tron, music plays a piviotal role in establishing the right mood for the moviegoer. How can you go wrong if you know that Daft Punk will be responsible for the entire score?  The choice of Daft Punk seems to be a no brainer for such a film steeped in technology.  For me,  a movie’s score must be on point in order for me to feel immersed within an epic film and another world.  I know that Daft Punk can take me to this dark, neon-laced, techological world starting from 00:01.

My only gripe with this film is that it will not be released until December of 2010 which is a long way over for the restless, but I’ve waited 28 years for this film already.  So, what is a few more months to me?
