A Novel Idea pt. 2 (Kojiki & Kojo) | Kojo Opuni

Just so you know, I take obscenely, long showers. Some of my best ideas are a result of my “marathon shower sessions”  This morning’s shower session proved to be very fruitful (and cleansing).  I was able to determine the direction of the collection of short stories I have been developing. In an earlier post, I mentioned taking my writing in an entirely different direction because I felt stifled by the direction of my short stories. Well, I have found the perfect marriage between my old path(collection of short stories) and new path (mythical novel), so I was able to devise a middle path.

Just this weekend I came across a ancient Japenese text called The Kojiki.  This is what Wikipedia has to say about this text:

Kojiki (古事記?, “Record of Ancient Matters”) is the oldest extant chronicle in Japan, dating from the early 8th century and composed by Ō no Yasumaro by Imperial request. The Kojiki is a collection of myths concerning the origin of the islands of Japan, and the Kami. Along with the Nihon Shoki, the myths contained in the Kojiki are part of the inspiration behind Shinto practices and myths, including the misogi purification ritual.[1] [...]The Kojiki is divided into three parts: Kamitsumaki (lit. “upper roll”), Nakatsumaki (lit. “middle roll”) and Shimotsumaki (lit. “lower roll”).

This gave me an idea for the direction of my novel.  I love the idea of the trilogy. I cannot explain why, but I do.  Also, I’ve been toying with the idea of the embedded novel for quite some time.   The embedded novel is a novel within a novel. My dream is to create a trilogy revolving around the concept of the embedded novel.

I do not wish to reveal too much about the contents of each text, but I would mold the trilogy around the following structure and themes.

Book 1:  Lower Roll – Reality/Death/Suicide/Short Stories/Setting:New York

Book 2:  Middle Roll – Imagination/Dualities/Novel/Setting: Inendachio (mythical)

Book 3:  Higher Roll – Beyond Imagination/Birth/Rebirth/Poetry/Setting: TBD (to be determined)

The existence of the novel would be found in the short stories.  The existence of the poetry would be found in the novel.  Each space is a seperate sphere/world in itself, but they are connected by its creators/writers.

The first text (collection of short stories) begins with a death. The 3rd and final text (collection of poetry) ends with a birth/rebirth.

I will say more later, but my head is spinning with the possibilites.
